Several years ago, while living in Oakland, California, I met a man who had been traveling back and forth to South East Asia and had collected many Thai and Burmese tattoo related items during his travels. I was fascinated by these objects and began collecting them. I eventually amassed and assortment of tattoo instruments, books and this suit, which is worn by the artists- the Shan Monks- of Burma (Myanmar) while working. A two piece suit, made of a silk-like fabric for a very tiny person, this item has the mantras, or magic protective spells against injury from weapons, malevolent spirits and illness. These designs are based on South East Asian horoscope and numerology and are accompanied by many fantastic creatures which are all hand drawn on the cloth! I have no idea how old this item actually is, but it is indeed very rare!
